Free Ideas! ~ Dear Twitter
Categories: Business

Dear Twitter,

Might I make notice of the article that recently laid your soul bare to the world? You know, the one on TechCrunch.

First, I am sorry they did that. It really sucks. I gather they talked to you before they did.

Second, I am impressed. I think you guys have a cool head on your shoulders.

Couple things I’d like to address, in no particular order.

1. User Acquisition: You speak of OEM deals; those work, and are great. Although I think you should really focus on this, “lowest common denominator”. As you know, and anyone who gets strategy knows, you have to get to the root. For you, the root is this.

If you want to grow, I believe your strongest ally is this statement. “We need a business model to subsidize use”. I am thinking you meant this.

To grow, the best place to do it is to encourage the user to consume it. Gateways to SMS usage are pay per models. Focus on sponsoring the free use of SMS, and you corner the market. I have an iPhone. I don’t use SMS enough because it costs me money. If it were free…

2. One dollar per user per year: That’s brilliance.

People want more for less. Businesses must adopt this to live in the future. This means, ask for less from more. You get it. I think your going to be around for a while.

3.Your mobile focus: It’s a key component to your future. The future does not belong to a laptop, it belongs to ‘tiny little’ computers. Your messages are ‘tiny little’ nuggets of life. Sounds like synergy to me.

4. Twitter as a Utility: You know why cable companies and phone companies and water and gas are social constants? You have to use them. You need them. They’re essential utilities in life.

How do you make twitter rise from being communication accoutrement, to communication necessity?

5. Platform Stacking: Facebook gets it. Apple gets it. Google gets it. Now it’s your turn.

Remember when the Facebook iPhone app went from an app, to a platform approach? Well, if you need me to explain, I will.

The lowest common denominator is the platform. The Internet is a platform. Actually, lower. The fiber network is the platform. The internet is a platform on the platform. Google is a platform on the platform of the platform of the platform. etc etc.

Where are you going to stack a platform? How are you going to stack a platform? When are you going to stack a platform?

Facebook hijacked the iPhone platform, with a Facebook platform. Dare I bet that the single most used ‘app’ is the Facebook platform app? I am going to guess that I am 110% correct, and will assume so. If I am not, it’s damn near close.

Anywho. The platform is the focus twitter. You’re almost there. You’ll make the dollar dream true, when you make the platform true. A utility as a platform. The possibility is endless.

Thanks for finally bringing an SNR filter to your world, and moving towards a platform. Now you need to make some serious strides to the next level.

Thanks, and I’ll see you on the next platform…

Brad
