Seamless Community, You Can Take It With You
Categories: Culture, Technology

Community use to be a tangible thing. A neighborhood, or meeting place, or more. It had real world physical manifestations that marked the history of man. Today, community is as much global as it is local. It is a mass fluctuation, not from zip codes and country codes, but from URL’s and IP’s.

Community is important; it’s like your portable identity. You go from work to play, to hobby, to passion… floating around through your different communities.

Community is portable for a reason. As we are human, conditioned to wander and visit, so is our spirit of community.

It makes sense for our community to roam from place to place, passion to passion. We each are members of different communities, and we each travel to them, and often transport them with us.

Online it is especially interesting to watch as people wander from community to community. Some of us are single focus community people. We Facebook, instead of Myspace or maybe we Twitter and Facebook. Then we migrate to our working community, it might live online and offline, but that is another of our communities.

Some of us transport our digital community in our phones. Some of us leave them alone, until the next time we sit down, tune in and login.

Unfortunately, many of our communities are fragmented. Not because people don’t want to bring there community with them, but because we prevent people from taking community with them.

People have made themselves portable. So it is, so it will be. So why can’t we let our community roam with the people, as the people do?
